I think many Germans, French hippies, Americans who wear long-white socks between their feet and their sandals, and people with material wealth will find this book offensive, unless they can tune out gross generalizations made against the groups with which they identify. It was heartwarming to read that the author of this book had such a life changing adventure in Nepal, my favorite of all the countries I have traveled in, and that he benefited from the warmth, hospitality, and happiness that so many in that country exude. Having trekked the same terrain he describes, I would argue that the author takes a number of embellishing liberties in his account, but there are dangers on and off the trail and the scenery certainly is awe-inspiring at nearly every turn.

I could see this being a fun book for someone heading to Nepal for a few weeks on a first trip to the east, but I definitely wouldn't recommend to many who has traveled extensively or is making a lengthy pilgrimage to the subcontinent. Dan Thompson wrote and published this book, which is more than I can say for myself. I even found myself admiring a handful of beautiful passages. Other readers may find more of them. Jul 16, Rachel rated it really liked it. I read this book in preparation for my trip to Nepal--as context or something.

It was easy to read, flowed well and was beautifully descriptive in a way that prepared me as best anyone can for what I would encounter on the trail. The story is interesting and takes you smoothly from page to page and a portion of the proceeds of the book go towards sustainable tourism practices which is a major bonus.

Jesus reflected the purest love, compassion, and sacrifice. Buddha showed the path of insight. All these are different routes to a single goal, liberation Many, many paths to the mountain top. Each has its own sights, experiences, hazards.

It is the union of reason and intuition that can not be defined but is only to be experienced. Evil and error are not ultimate.

There is no Hell, for that means there is a place where God is not, and there are sins which exceed his love. Fool indeed is the man who, coming to a mine of diamonds, begins to search for glass beads. They want a God who will care for them, who will not demand that they struggle for enlightenment, but who will accept them just as they are, with all their sins, and take away their sins with repentance.

It is not so, it will never be so, but perhaps it is the only way the unenlightened can bear to think of their Gods.

Lancelot smiled bitterly. They want not to wait for God's justice but to see it now. And that is the lure which this new breed of priests has promised them.

It is like breathing: you cannot breathe for one hour and then put it aside for twenty-three hours, otherwise you will be dead. You have to go on breathing. Even while you are asleep you have to go on breathing. Even in a deep coma you have to go on breathing. Meditation is the breath of your soul. Just as breathing is the life of the body, meditation is the life of the soul. See them move along the road in search of life divine Beggers in a goldmine Dehra dehra dun, dehra dun dun Dehra dehra dun, dehra dun dun Dehra dehra dun, dehra dun dun Dehra dehra dun Many roads can take you there, many different ways One direction takes you years, another takes you days.

We believe in a personal, unique, and separate identity — but if we dare to examine it, we find that this identity depends entirely on an endless collection of things to prop it up: our name, our "biography," our partners, family, home, job, friends, credit cards… It is on their fragile and transient support that we rely for our security.
